GENERAL GEORGE S. BROWN CUP

It was a double header of Sunday polo as QR Jets took over the afternoon presenting two six goal games playing the USPA General S. Brown tournament.

Piney Woods Polo’s Jack Kiely (green) and his horse Kangaroo go for the ride-off against Mother Chukker Polo/Schiffer Hicks Johnson LLC’s Ignacio Deltour (pink) on Masita.

It was a battle of the team captains in the first game between Piney Woods Polo and Mother Chukker Polo/Schiffer Hicks Johnson LLC. Piney Woods Polo’s team captain, Jack Kiely, gave his team a 4.5 goal lead after the first two chukkers, while Mother Chukker Polo/Schiffer Hicks Johnson LLC’s team captain, Robert Orthwein, kept his team in the game with two goals of his own to end the first half trailing 2 to 4.5.  In the third chukker, Orthwein converted an open goal penalty shot to gain on the Piney Woods Polo lead, but Kiely responded with back to back goals ending the chukker leading 6.5 to 3. Kiely started the fourth and final chukker with yet another penalty conversion, and as the clock ticked down, Orthwein answered with his fourth goal of the day, ending the first game with a win for Piney Woods Polo with a score of  7.5 to 4.

HPC grounds staff member, Lupe, presents the Shoppa’s John Deere Tractor

As the first game’s players shook hands, spectators from both sides of the field enjoyed their polo break, taking the opportunity to walk out onto the field for the divot stomp.  Complimentary champagne was served thanks to American National, and as people stomped divots, they could also get a close up view of the Bill Fick Ford Lightning truck and the shiny green Shoppa’s John Deere tractor! Spectators returned to their seats to enjoy another 4 chukkers of polo as the second game’s players and horses started to enter the field ready for the next match up.

La Portola’s Ignacio Saenz hits sixth gear on Rubia in front the member’s side

As the ball was bowled in, both teams played a beautiful open game with La Portola’s Ignacio Saenz being the solo scorer to end the first chukker. La Portola extended their lead as teammates Mark Urdahl and Audry Persano each found a goal of their own. BCI/CW Petroleum’s Chris Williams broke the ice for his team, ending the second chukker trailing 1.5 to 3. La Portola kept their offensive pressure as they scored three unanswered goals in the third chukker.  In the fourth chukker, BCI/CW Petroleum answered with back to back goals from Carter Nix and Chris Williams, but as the clock started to wind down,  La Portola’s Saenz and Joao Aranha traded goals with BCI/CW Petroleum’s Chad Bowman to end the game in La Portola’s favor with a score of 8 to 4.5.
